It’s the big debate! Which is better – skiing, or snowboarding? Well before we get into that, firstly, a few fun facts about snowboarding! Did you know that the snowboard was originally called the Snurfer? Snowboarding also only became an Olympic sport in 1998. As a relatively new sport, in comparison to skiing, it’s only natural you might gravitate towards skiing, however, we’d like to tell you why snowboarding is great.
If you’ve worn ski boots, then you’ll know this is a big perk. Ski boots are rigid and rather tricky to walk in. Snowboarding boots are flexible and allow you to walk easily. Granted, they’re not always comfortable, but when you need to get up and down some stairs, these boots are much easier.
Don’t get us wrong, skiing is cool and social too, but snowboarding is equally fun and friendly. Snowboarders love a chilled chat at the top of the slopes. Plus, the gear is cool. Snowboarding gear is usually bright and looks great when snowboarding down the white slopes. Snowboarders also tend to like a beanie hat, definitely cool right.
Of course, it’s not super easy. But in comparison to skiing on fresh powder, it’s a lot less challenging. This means that even less advanced snowboarders can enjoy that untouched snow.
Learning how to balance on a board has its advantages when it comes to other sports. Why not try some surfing or skateboarding? If you take up snowboarding, it will open up a whole new world to you. Not only can you learn these new sports, but meet new people and enjoy different sports cultures.
It can get tiring being on the slopes, and sometimes you just want to plop down on the snow. When you have skis on, this isn’t quite as easy as with a snowboard. You can easily rock back and sit down with a snowboard, but with skis, you either have to sit sideways, or take your skis off.
We’ve given you five reasons as to why snowboarding is great, and if you want to try it out why not book your chalet and have a go? Some of the great resorts for snowboarding are Tignes, Val Thorens, and Chamonix. Find out more at ChaletFinder.
